When I sat down this morning to write, this quote caught my attention. Growing up were you taught to never put off until tomorrow what you could get done today?
I was! While I understand the concept, and the work ethic it instilled in me, the theory behind it seems flawed to me.
I don't know about anyone else but there are ALWAYS things that could be done, need to be started, should be finished, prepped, planned, bandaged, hugged, kissed, budgeted, picked up, dropped off, washed or.... Well, you get the idea.
If I always tried to accomplish everything than when would I get to rest?
How am I supposed to find time to take care of myself so I can take care of the people I love?
The concept that we can never relax and that taking time for ourselves is selfish has been so engrained into us by culture and society. Excellence is expected and when it's not met then we equate that to failure somehow.
It is okay to look at the pile of dishes and decide that mac and cheese is the way to go! It's okay to look at all the clutter and decide that a nap for your mental health is more important.
Having a strong work ethic is phenomenal, but if your mental health deteriorates to the point that you can't function that ethic won't matter.
Now I'm not promoting procrastination by any means. While I have a strong work ethic, I am also the queen of procrastination. I don't recommend that lifestyle for anyone!
Trying to get everything accomplished at the expense of your physical and mental health has far worse consequences.
While you go through your life today take a moment to look around.
What is one thing that you could possibly put aside until tomorrow?
What kind of self-care could you do instead?
